Event Description

Reading Partners is a literacy non-profit that pairs students behind in reading level with volunteer one-on-one tutors. These tutors use a standardized specific curriculum that their team [over many seasons] has created and modified. All of the curriculum their tutors use go into sets which consist of reading books for each lesson, tutoring materials, interactive visuals and worksheets. In all, 7 boxes will be made up and shipped to each school we place a reading room in. They are currently workijg on new curriculum sets to go out to all new school sites they are opening in 2012.

What we'll be doing

We will be helping to prepare and package the parts to these sets. Tasks will include:

-sorting books.
-stickering pouches.
-cutting and putting velcro on laminated flashcards.
-building boxes.
-stuffing pouches with worksheets.
-sorting lanyards and nametags.
-organizing visuals aids.

What you should know

Parking is free along the street, we have an adjacent lot across from our front door, that has permit signs up, but is not enforced and anyone can park there.

Wear whatever! There is good heating in the office and none of the tasks will be strenuous.

Where to meet

The main suite is 202 but we will meet in Suite 120, which is on the bottom floor. There will be a clearly marked sign with balloons to make sure everyone finds the correct door.

Organization: Reading Partners

Reading Partners is dedicated to transforming struggling young readers into confident readers who are excited about learning. How we do it: Focus on children from low-income communities. Give one-on-one instruction at the student’s reading level. Recruit and train community volunteers to work with children. Partner with high-need elementary schools to offer an effective program on campus. Provide a way for volunteers to give a small amount of their time to make a huge difference in a child’s life.
